Strategies to Foster Sustainable Opportunities and Deter youth Migration.

Sustainable Opportunities and Deter youth Migration. December 2023.

In recent years, there has been a significant surge in youth migration, particularly from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti to regions such as Europe, North America, and the Gulf states. These arduous journeys carry profound consequences for individuals and the countries involved. Not only do young people risk their lives crossing perilous distances, but their countries of origin also face the loss of a valuable young workforce.

Recognizing these challenges, Kisiwani has undertaken the responsibility of discouraging youth migration. The approach involves raising awareness and implementing a blend of strategies tailored to the unique circumstances of each community or region within the Horn of Africa. Continuous evaluation and adaptation of policies and programs are deemed essential to ensure their sustained success in the long term.

To mitigate youth migration, it is crucial to present alternatives that foster stability, educational advancement, and employment prospects, thereby alleviating the underlying factors that compel forced migration.
